Jack was one of Canada's most distinguished ceramic artists. Born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1934, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1957 and his M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1959. His work can best be described as organic, rich, voluptuous and sometimes whimsical. He created an array of works ranging from small vessel forms to monumental murals (Canadian Museum of Civilization). His technique ranged from sawdust-fired earthenware to fine high-fired porcelain as iterated by his "desire to create something new and original".
